Testing the automaticity of syntax using masked visual priming

چکیده

Language comprehension proceeds at a very fast pace. It is argued that context influences the speed of language by providing informative cues. How syntactic contextual information processing incoming words is, however, less known. Here we employed masked priming paradigm in four behavioural experiments German to test whether primes automatically influence categorisation nouns and verbs. We found robust effects with but only when verbs were morpho-syntactically marked. Furthermore, that, compared baseline, slow down target relationship between prime syntactically incorrect, rather than speeding it up correct. This argues favour an inhibitory nature priming. Overall, data indicate humans extract features from guide analysis during online processing.

the effect of using visual aids on the development of speech act of disagreement among iranian intermediate efl learners

abstract the present study tried to investigate the effect of visual aids (films) on the development of the speech act of disagreement among iranian efl intermediate learners. to this end, the researcher selected 40 homogeneous intermediate learners based on their scores on oxford placement test. .the subjects then divided into control group and experimental group. both classes were tested by ...

Visual similarity effects on masked priming

We investigated the role of the visual similarity of masked primes to targets in a lexical decision experiment. In the primes, some letters in the target (e.g., A in ABANDON) had either visually similar letters (e.g., H), dissimilar letters (D), visually similar digits (4), or dissimilar digits (6) substituted for them. The similarities of the digits and letters to the base letter were equated ...

Masked repetition priming using magnetoencephalography.

Masked priming is used in psycholinguistic studies to assess questions about lexical access and representation. We present two masked priming experiments using MEG. If the MEG signal elicited by words reflects specific aspects of lexical retrieval, then one expects to identify specific neural correlates of retrieval that are sensitive to priming. To date, the electrophysiological evidence has b...

Examining speech production using masked priming

The time to initiate naming a printed target word is reduced when preceded by an identical masked prime (match prime) or by one that has the same initial letter (onset prime) compared to an all letter different control. Masked priming has been examined using vocal response time but offers an opportunity to examine speech production dynamics before the onset of speech acoustics. We tracked tongu...

Phonological mediation in visual masked priming: evidence from phonotactic repair.

In a series of 4 experiments, the authors show that phonological repair mechanisms, known to operate in the auditory modality, are directly translated in the visual modality. This holds with the provision that printed stimuli are presented for a very brief duration and that the effect of phonological repair is tested after a delay of some 100 ms has elapsed after that presentation. The case of ...
